You can brush your teeth the night of surgery, but rinse gently and be careful around the surgery site. We suggest keeping your mouth clean with salt water rinses or a toothbrush.

Maintain Good Oral Health With Wisdom Tooth Extraction

If a wisdom tooth doesn't have room to grow (impacted wisdom tooth), resulting in pain, infection or other dental problems, you'll likely need to have it pulled. Wisdom tooth extraction may be done by a dentist or an oral surgeon.

Most wisdom tooth extractions don't result in long-term complications. However, removal of impacted wisdom teeth occasionally requires a surgical approach that involves making an incision in the gum tissue and removing bone. Rarely, complications can include:

Your dentist may perform the procedure in the office. However, if your tooth is deeply impacted or if the extraction requires an in-depth surgical approach, your dentist may suggest you see an oral surgeon. In addition to making the area numb with local anesthetic, your surgeon may suggest sedation to allow you to be more comfortable during the procedure.

Not everybody needs to have their wisdom teeth removed. But about 85% of people who do have their third-molars need this procedure to preserve their oral health. Here are some of the situations in which we may suggest a wisdom tooth extraction:

Once sedation medications have been given, your surgeon will administer local anesthesia to numb the teeth and gums. Impacted wisdom teeth (wisdom teeth trapped in the gums or bone) are exposed with incisions, giving your surgeon adequate access. Once the wisdom teeth are visible, your oral surgeon carefully loosens and lifts them from their sockets, cleans the areas and places stitches. In most cases, the stitches will fall out on their own in a few days.

Wisdom teeth removal is a common oral surgery procedure that can reduce your risk for dental problems. The decision to remove your wisdom teeth is an important one, and the choice may not always be clear. Talk with your healthcare provider about whether wisdom tooth extraction is right for you.

If your wisdom teeth are coming in, you have some important decisions to make. You and your dentist should discuss whether removing these teeth is the right thing to do. If you choose not to take them out, maintaining good oral hygiene is critical. You want to avoid problems such as tooth decay, gum disease, and infections. Brushing and flossing will help to prevent these conditions. You also need to consistently visit the dentist.

Regular dental checkups are always a good practice. As soon as a child starts getting teeth, visiting the dentist every six months should become a habit. This must continue throughout life to maintain good oral health and overall wellness. Some people may want to visit the dentist even more frequently. This includes patients will existing conditions such as gum disease and severe tooth decay. People should also see a dentist right away for emergencies, such as extreme tooth pain, tooth loss, tooth damage, or jaw problems.

Having wisdom teeth presents many challenges. It is difficult to effectively brush and floss these teeth because of their hard-to-reach location. Because of this, many patients struggle to clean them properly. At a dental appointment, the hygienist will remove plaque and tartar buildup from each tooth and at the gumline. The hygienist will also polish all of the teeth. If the patient is not doing a good enough job cleaning a wisdom tooth, a dental visit can help.

Patients who have wisdom teeth should be mindful of how well these teeth are interacting with others. The dentist will closely monitor the growth of these teeth and look for any concerns. If the dentist spots any reasons to remove the teeth at any point, the dentist will arrange for surgery. These visits are also good times for the dentist to diagnose any conditions that the patient may not otherwise know about.

Maintaining proper daily dental habits is critical. Your responsibilities are even more important when you have wisdom teeth. You can avoid serious problems with these teeth when you follow these tips. Your dentist will also be a good source of help to keep these molars healthy and strong.

Some wisdom teeth erupt (emerge through the gum) without causing any problems, but sometimes, wisdom teeth come through at an angle and push into the gum or the tooth beside them. This is called impaction.

Tooth extractions are common for adults in the United States, with oral surgeons and dentists pulling millions of teeth each year. Whether you will have a tooth pulled due to decay, trauma, overcrowding, or wisdom tooth extraction, knowing how to care for your extraction site after oral surgery is essential. At Soundview Family Dental, we believe knowledge is power and that it is important to understand your post-operative instructions in the days following your tooth extraction.

It can take up to ten days for the extraction site to heal completely. However, healing times will vary from person to person. It also depends on which teeth were extracted, as wisdom teeth extraction healing can take longer. Signs of blood are common, even after a clot has formed. When saliva mixes in the mouth, it can pick up blood and appear to be bleeding. This is normal but, larger amounts of blood or consistent bleeding is not. If you experience any of these signs or symptoms, contact your dentist or oral surgeon immediately.

One of the most influential ways we help improve oral health is by running public-facing campaigns that spread positive messages about the importance of a healthy smile. Our programmes reach millions of people every year, in dental practices, hospitals, schools and workplaces all over the world, giving advice and information about achieving wellbeing through good oral health.

We encourage you to drink lots of liquids and maintain a soft diet. Avoid hot liquids as this may prematurely dissolve the blood clot. Do not drink alcohol as this can have compounding effects with pain medicine and may alter the effects of other prescribed medications. We recommend foods that are soft, thick, and creamy for the first 5 to 7 days. Avoid popcorn and all seedy type food (e.g., raspberries) and any other food that may easily get caught in the extraction sites. Avoid spitting, using straws for liquids, and smoking for at least one week following the surgery.

Swelling to some extent follows nearly every tooth extraction. This is nature's way of beginning the healing process. The swelling is often quite severe after the removal of impacted wisdom teeth. An ice pack applied intermittently for up to 48 hours may help to reduce the swelling. The swelling will usually reach a maximum in 36 to 48 hours. Note: Please do not blow your nose for one week after having upper wisdom teeth removed, as this can lead to healing complications.

For additional confirmation, we will take X-rays and scans to better view the underlying tooth structures. Based on these images, we can determine the extent of your wisdom teeth impaction and plan your oral surgery.

Another significant feature of your wisdom tooth consultation is taking time to discuss your expectations from your oral surgery to remove the wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth also can be impacted -- they are enclosed within the soft tissue and/or the jawbone or only partially break through or erupt through the gum. Partial eruption of the wisdom teeth allows an opening for bacteria to enter around the tooth and cause an infection, which results in pain, swelling, jaw stiffness, and general illness. Partially erupted teeth are also more prone to tooth decay and gum disease, because their hard-to-reach location and awkward positioning makes brushing and flossing difficult. 2ff7e9595c
